Swindling, Spying and Propaganda in Travian

We’ve all attacked, many of us have spied, some of us have back stabbed. But have you ever spread propaganda? How about “accidentally” ? Your efforts could go unnoticed: but if they aren’t you could inflict serious damage on your enemy – or at least what they think of you.

So What is Accidental Propaganda?

You can find literally millions of definitions to this word, but it all boils down to one thing:

Information that you spread to promote a cause.

And by information I mean quite literally anything that shares numbers, values, ideas, plots, plans and schemes with anyone and everyone who comes across it.

“Ok Dan, What Do I Need To Pull This Off?”

Just a couple of tools, all of them free.

  1. If you’ve ever produced a battle report worth sharing, you know what Travilog is. In case you don’t, this tool allows you to paste raw HTML text from your battle report into the box and produce a universal battle report that can be shared with people who aren’t necessarily on your Travian server. If you’re worried about a battle report expiring or want to share it across multiple wings you can do so by using Travilog or a similar service.
  2. Kirilloid‘s calculators are arguably the best ones out there. They’re much more comprehensive than Travian’s built in ones and provide you with accurate information so you can “strategize”. If you go here, you can quite literally calculate how a battle is going to turn out before it takes place.

And that’s it!

“So How Does This Work? Get To The Point Dan!”

To illustrate I’m going to show you three battle reports. Pay close attention to the obvious errors on them.

battlereport1

Notice I have edited the numbers that I copied here swapping them all for zeroes; that was easy to notice… really.

Now look at this report:

battlereport2

Pretty powerful hero right? NO! I left the hero in the report to show you that I could make it look like the hero killed all those troops. Of course you know that can’t be since heroes cannot destroy city walls…

Do you see where I’m going with this? By editing the numbers in the Travilog box with my keyboard I can make a shared battle report into an accidental propaganda spreading report.

No, really. Why Would I Want To Make Stupid Reports Like The One Above?

Stay with it, I’m almost there.

Look at this final report:

battlereport3

The losses are calculated correctly using the Kirilloid Calculator, and the numbers are altered in the Travilog copy/paste input box to make it look like I have this HUGE hammer… when really I don’t.

Now if you’re going to spread Accidental Propaganda make sure you change the numbers at the bottom of these reports under the “Stats.:” section. Notice I didn’t. If you did the calculations you’d see that the losses on the attacker’s side don’t add up. Most people don’t look at those, but if you want to be effective you don’t want to give even one person the idea that your report could be fake (I did not use fake reports for Tips 4 Travian or Travian on Crack).

Summing Up

So with a little text editing, you can share reports like the last one (on forums, chat boxes, mm’s) that tell other players you have more or less troops than you really have. This is an excellent FEAR tactic to illicit other players into giving up and making them bend to your submission. :-)
