I recently came across a Travian strategy I’ve seen work like magic. However to implement it there is a catch: You need to have a team of dedicated players who are accountable to each other. This is relatively easy to accomplish if you use sitters and have sit-checks. It also helps to have a private forum externally hosted (not on Travian server) that stays up year-long. This builds up a sense of community.

The strategy players on your attacker’s mind a little, which is probably why it’s so effective especially since no one does it.

Let’s say you have an incoming attack. The typical thing to do is to message your alliance and send out a request (through one of the leaders) for reinforcements to the village that is suspected to have a real attack (with catapults and/or chiefs). Everyone in the alliance will send out 100 – 500 units to “help out”. If you have 60 members in your alliance, you can typically expect to get help from 10 – 15. Say each of these sent 500 troops. That gives you a maximum of 7000 defensive troops, coupled with your own to hold out against a 35,000 troop hammer.

Am I the only one who sees this not working? Type these numbers in a combat simulator and see what comes out. They ALL die.

Now what if you had 100% cooperation in your alliance whereby anyone who didn’t send 75% of their troops was immediately booted out? You’d have at least 25 players sending reinforcements (who are within range) and you’d have closer to 50,000 or 60,000 troops in the village to defend against the 35,000 hammer.

Some will die, but the attacker will take the most damages. This is called teamwork and when a team of friends who come back round after round prove themselves by working together like this they become unstoppable.

I won’t mention the name of the alliance I learned this from, but I will say that they were #1 on a speed server for the entire round.

A lot of experienced players are having problems with the newly proposed Travian rules that TravianGames is testing on the Com10 server. One of the biggest objections is the rule that a village will only be able to send attacks/call-back-reinforcements depending on the level of the rally point. This isn’t so bad, but here’s the real kicker: Only 4 attack movements will be able to be sent out per level of the rally point. This means even if your rally point is level 20 you won’t be able to send out more than 80 attacks at a time.

What this means for you:

This is actually a great change because it means that players will be raiding less, which means there will be more resources on the table for you to steal. Players who have critically thought about how they are going to evolve their raiding strategies and tricks are going to be the most successful ones at keeping their upper ranks and building the biggest hammers.

You will also still be able to send out 400 attacks each time you send out troops; you just won’t be able to do it all from one village. There’s a way to go about doing this that’s a little complex. Basically what it suggests is that you create a separate raiding outpost from each of your villages. These villages are spread out a little so that you can make the best use of space, but not spread yourself out to thin (opening yourself to attacks without being able to get reinforcements in your village in time).

Given the excessively high time commitment of playing on speed servers, there is no reason for not having a dual after you’ve played a few rounds on your own.

I decided to play on a foreign server because I wanted to test a few things including:

Could I get into alliance No. 1 with no help

Could I run an account on my own and still beat players who started 4 weeks before me (I started 4 weeks late)

Better my Italian…

Turns out I was able to pull off No 2…but only part of No. 1. If I had a dual (not a sitter) I could have had some cover while I was sleeping. I probably would also have had the sense to call for reinforcements in a more coherent way instead of “io bisogno i rinforzi…” (which sounds about right to me).

To be honest I was getting a little fed up running the account on my own and juggling bigger events in RL as well. It was madness! I needed a break, but there was no one there to give me some slack.

But it was fun too! Lesson learned.
